Two budget phones. Two completely different philosophies. Both launching within 24 hours of each other — and your decision just got a lot harder.
Google confirmed the Pixel 10a will open for pre-orders on February 18, 2026, and reports suggest Apple will announce the iPhone 17e on February 19 via a press release. The timing is no coincidence. Both companies are fighting for the same buyer — someone who wants a premium ecosystem experience without paying flagship prices. But these phones take completely different approaches to getting there.
The Pixel 10a starts at $499 in the USA and around ₹49,990 in India for 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The iPhone 17e is expected at $599 in the USA and around ₹64,990 in India for the same 128GB base model. That is a $100 or ₹15,000 price gap — enough to matter for budget-conscious buyers. The Pixel 10a also offers a 256GB option at roughly ₹69,000, while the iPhone 17e goes all the way to 512GB at ₹74,990.
On raw performance, the iPhone 17e wins decisively. It runs Apple's A19 chip built on a 3nm process — the same generation powering the flagship iPhone 17 series. Early benchmarks suggest the A19 scores around 3,500 in Geekbench single-core, nearly double the Pixel 10a's expected score of 1,680 with the Tensor G4 chip. In daily use, that means faster app launches, smoother multitasking, and better gaming performance. The iPhone 17e is also getting Apple's new C1X modem and N1 Wi-Fi chip, both designed in-house to improve connectivity and reduce power consumption.
But performance is only part of the story. The Pixel 10a packs a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and up to 2,700 nits peak brightness. The iPhone 17e sticks with a 6.1-inch 60Hz display — the same sluggish refresh rate Apple has been using on budget iPhones since 2020. Scrolling through apps, swiping between screens, and watching videos will feel noticeably smoother on the Pixel 10a. The Pixel's screen is also significantly brighter, making it far more readable outdoors in direct sunlight.
Camera systems tell a similar story. The Pixel 10a features a 48MP main camera with OIS and a 13MP ultrawide, plus a 13MP front camera. The iPhone 17e gets a single 48MP rear camera with OIS and an upgraded 18MP front camera with Centre Stage. Google's dual-camera system gives you more flexibility for wide shots, group photos, and landscapes. But the iPhone 17e's new 18MP selfie camera — borrowed from the flagship iPhone 17 — is a significant upgrade over the Pixel's 13MP front shooter, especially for video calls and content creators.
Google also dominates on AI-powered photography features. The Pixel 10a includes Best Take, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and advanced editing tools powered by Google's on-device AI. Apple's iPhone 17e will support Apple Intelligence, but the company has been slower to roll out photography-specific AI features compared to Google.
Battery life leans toward the Pixel 10a. It carries a 5,100mAh battery with 45W wired charging — a major upgrade from the 23W charging on the Pixel 9a. The iPhone 17e is expected to have a 4,005mAh battery with 25W MagSafe wireless charging. MagSafe is the iPhone's big advantage here — it unlocks an entire ecosystem of magnetic accessories including wallets, car mounts, and chargers. The Pixel 10a sticks with standard Qi wireless charging, which works but lacks the convenience of magnetic snap-on accessories.
Design preferences will differ. The Pixel 10a comes in four colours — Berry, Fog, Obsidian, and Lavender — with a flat camera module and plastic back. The iPhone 17e is expected in just black and white with glass front and back, and it may finally ditch the notch for Dynamic Island — a much more modern look. However, both phones are expected to have 8GB of RAM and similar build quality with IP68 water resistance on the iPhone and solid durability on the Pixel.
Software support is where the Pixel 10a pulls ahead. Google commits to seven years of Android OS and security updates, meaning a phone you buy in 2026 stays supported until 2033. Apple typically supports iPhones for five to six years, which is excellent but not quite as long as Google's promise. Both phones launch with the latest software — Android 16 on Pixel, iOS 20 on iPhone.
So which should you buy? If you value raw performance, a premium ecosystem, MagSafe accessories, and plan to stay in Apple's world, the iPhone 17e justifies the extra $100. If you want a smoother display, dual cameras, better AI photography, longer battery life, and more software support for less money, the Pixel 10a is the smarter buy. Both are excellent budget phones — they just excel at completely different things.
